As an FYI.....
The guy that did the body work on one of my trucks used to use plastic from milk / water jugs to make plastic spacers to go between metal to metal joints.
I've done this a number of times since. Seems to work quite well, especially in instances where the thickness needs to be as thin as possible.
Rubber tends to trap moisture, which leads to rust.
