Stuart My diagram and yours both show that the lighting comes off of the upstream (unfused) side of the ammeter. I haven't tried to take the ammeter apart so I'm assuming the top terminal where the battery input is connected and the bottom terminal connected to the fuse clip on the same side of the ammeter are connected internally.
