I've asked that question before but no one posted measurements.
I'll post outer side-to-side measurements of the metal base for a 54 if someone posts measurements for pre-50 metal seat base.
In 1950, the seat was also "made more durable by adding turns to the coil springs and by increasing the gauge of the spring wire"(
LCVA article).
