Check the connection on top of the starter. Check the ground cable. If it grounds to the frame than you must have a heavy gauge ground strap from the engine to the frame. When you solve  that the rest should fall in. I,ve seen those 1 color wireing jobs. Sounds like you are going to need a whole harness. They say money can't buy happiness.
