you won't prevent re-occurance, cuz the corrosion has already destroyed the original finish, so yer better off to just go the the parts store and get a replacement, which isn't hard to do - common problem on all the old trucks
if ya wanna just patch it up, use one of those coarse 3M green scrubbers on it and put a new bulb in - will usually last a year or so
