13BAce, apparently you don't understand the term "hot wire". When a thief hot wires a car he bypasses the ignition switch with a wire from battery to the coil.
With the points side of the coil grounded the engine won't run even if hot wired. In normal operation the coil fires when the points open. When grounded it can't fire.
