you may have either an internal or external regulated alternator, if it still has the original
generator style regulator [3 terminals], with an internally regulated alternator, the regulator is just a junction box, if you have an externally regulated alternator with
the correct regulator [4 terminals], it controls the charging activity and could be defective
you might also put a charger on the battery and see if it's been run down after your fiddling or if still has a good state of charge
