I have no idea how long they would run, Denny, but I would chuckle when I heard the antics/fixes used to keep an old farm truck running.
Another unorthodox "repair" was to file the mating surfaces on rod bearing ends for a tighter fit (they even used plastigauge - this was precision work) - to "fix" rod knocks and/or low oil pressure.
