Original 6v battery cables were supposedly 2 gauge (12v cables are usually 4 gauge). Use battery cables of 1 gauge or fatter (0 or 00 are better - also called 1/0 or 2/0)
Using an 8v battery temporarily avoids the real problem (problems), and the 8v system might decrease the life of 6v bulbs.
