I think that if you re-read your last sentence.
"You should have seen the lifters when I cleaned them out...OOOOOHHHH. Bad."
That should be reason enough to get a plan to take the engine out and get it properly cleaned. Your spending a fair chunk of money on pistons and other parts, its a small detour in the long run.
