There is no way to adapt the solonoid starter to use the mechanical switch so you will need to change the starter.
Yes you must determine if you have a 12V or 6V starter because they use different flywheels.
As stated above, there is no problem with using the 6V starter with 12V. (as long as you have a 6V flywheel.)
