For those of us who have had the experience of doing this a couple hundred times in our life It ends up not being quite that simple. The Radio Shack reducers will work in some cases but only if the voltage and load both remain constant which in our case is seldom. I spent the past ten years working this out and tried everything available from Radio Shack and all the aftermarket and nothing was reliable 100 percent of the time.
In the case of the Radio Shack products they typically had a 6 month life span. Accuracy was also a problem on certain applications...
That is why I designed the Runtz for the dash gauges, they will accept an incoming voltage range of between 8 and 20 volts and put out a constant 7.5 volts. They are solid state for accuracy, and also have built-in circuit overload protection to protect the dash gauges from excessive amperage such as in the case of a short in a wiring harness. They also come with a 2-year warranty. There is more things to consider but the point is you get what you pay for.
