My experience is that most strippers only remove one layer at a time. I would use a water base stripper and a scotchbrite pad. Lay a uniform layer of stripper down with a brush and wait a few minutes then scrub it with the scotchbrite pad and warm soapy water. Do small areas at a time, no more than two square feet.
When you are finished I would lightly go over everything with rubbing compound to make the newly exposed finish look uniform.
