It sounds like you need a new tail light for your clamshell doors and will have to use aftermarket taillamps for a '54 pickup. The distance between posts is 2" on the '54 pickup's taillamps.
The distance is 3 1/4" on the "barn-door" suburban/panel-truck taillamp (but I doubt if this measure is what you want).
