Thank guys, I think your suggestions are on target. What makes this situation different is I now have an coil internal to the HEI distributor and also lost the resister. I don't have the resistor wire on the starter any more and thought my new system was O.K. without it. I talked to the wire harness manufacturer and they will add that to my system. something perhaps related to my ignition switch-had to buy a new one, didn't have an original. Anyway, learn something every day and I have always appreciated hearing what you folks who know something have to say. These forums were great for this apprentice wrench fetcher!
