Absolutely the best way to go is pull engine and transmission together on those cars.
If you can find a spare transmission yoke to insert in the transmission you won't even have to lose any fluid.
As far as irregular shifting is concerned,remember, correct adjustment of throttle/transmission linkage is necessary to proper shift points too.
