For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Feb 2012 Posts: 506 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2012 Posts: 506 | I have a 58 Suburban with a late 60's 250 in it. I validated the casting numbers in this forum (huge help I must say). I ran the numbers on the side of the carb and came up with a Rochester 1ME. I ordered a rebuild kit and replacement float from Mikes Carb Shop and it came within a couple of days.
Here's my issue. I never even taken a carb off an engine in the past more less tried to rebuild one. I'm pretty handy around the garage and I'm not afraid to tackle to project. What I'm looking for are lessons learned (the hard or easy way) and/or tips for the rebuild. I downloaded a repair manual from the Carb Shop website so I'll have that, but manuals don't always tell the whole story or the best way to do something.
Don't just limit comments to the rebuild on the workbench. Any hints on the disconnect and removal would be great too. Stuff like "don't forget to do xyz so that you don't drop a nut or bolt down into the engine when taking the carb off." Or "remember to have a drain can handy so you don't dump a quart of fuel on the garage floor." Etc Etc.
I'm having trouble starting the engine. It seems to be very temperamental if you step on the gas while trying to start it. Once it is running it purrs like a kitten but bogs down bad when you step on the gas. Once warmed up its better but still rough under acceleration. The carb does show signs of leakage around the caskets and around the base where it connects to the manifold. I figure a rebuild might be low hanging fruit and a good first step. Any other thoughts on improving start up and acceleration would also be appreciated.
I just moved into the Kansas City area and am real excited about the reunion in September. Hopefully I'll see some of you there. Thanks!!
Thanks
Larry
