Found out the problem with the brake lights. On the motor side of the firewall, the two wires were off of the terminals. Pluged them in and brake lights worked.
Now that I think about it, that was about the time I noticed that the blinker light on the blinker handle started staying on. Maybe that was why the brake light wires were off from the previous owner.
