If you're looking to protect metal prior to painting there are probably better products that are actually an aid to painting and not necessary to remove like you would an oil

Picklex is not compatible with some primers. It's NOT compatible with etch primer, for sure. I used it on my bed pieces before putting them into storage.
Other Bolters had cautioned me against it because of known incompatibility issues, yet I know that some Epoxy primers will work with it.
I'd say you should apply epoxy primer to your bare metal ASAP. If, like me, you can't do that, then Picklex is one of many options that will work but I'd first make sure it will not cause adhesion problems with whatever primer you plan to use. Apparently, epoxy primer is fine as long as it does not contain any acid.
