Two possibilities- - - -yes, there are freeze plugs behind the flywheel, one on each side of a small block V-8, and there's also a coolant passage at the extreme back end of the intake manifold on each side where it meets the cylinder head. A seep leak there can run down the back of the block and look like it's coming from the bellhousing area. Leaks don't run uphill- - - -coolant or oil- - - -always look for the highest wet spot!
