Just as you said - remove the hinge pin. Then reinstall a new pin in each end(4 total) in the shape of an L. The leg of the L goes in the "hinge" the other leg is held to the firewall and the radiator by clips with 1/4 turn fasteners. I'll try to snap a pic and post later in the week.
