I have always used a hi-lift floor jack when I've used my trucks. I got a sears/craftsman high-lift/SUV 6000lb one about 8 years ago and have never had a problem with it. It has the nice feature of a quick lift till it hits the load then it works normal. It is a little heavier and more awkward to carry around then a bottle jack, but it will give you a lower lowered position which can make it much easier to use.
I have used it primarily with my 16' Flatbed car truck, with and without a trailer. I have changed tires fully loaded w/o a problem. I am 8000lb empty on the truck so loaded about 11-12k lbs plus trailer tongue weight....but when you do some math 6000lb is a lot of lift and you should never need more. Even when I am fully loaded lifting the rear duals off the ground is only going to be in the 4000lb range max...and with the high lift jacks you really don't have much need for blocking and a floor jack has a lot more stability than a bottle jack does.(not that you should need it if jacking safely any way though)
