Model numbers, engine serial numbers, vehicle serial numbers, etc
for 1958 are shown on these two pages.
There was no consistent "VIN" used - I have bought trucks from the same states with two states using either the engine or the vehicle code.
Using the engine code in later 235/261 years would not have a date ID in that "VIN" and would not be a unique ID (and, I assume this is the same for a 283) .
