To eliminate running a hot from the batt to the coil, take a test light & check the batt side of the coil. if it lights, your good. The wire from the coil to the distributor may be grounding out
preventing coil saturation. I would check that wire also. You may have disturbed it when putting the cap and rotor on. Also, check the screw where the coil wire connects to the points. I've had problems with corrosion at that point in the past.
You may want to remove the screw and clean it.
Check to make sure the wire isn't behind the insulating disk, causing an intermittant open.
