Well I finally got it on.
Turns out it follows aftermarket practice. The hole in the knob was not drilled all the way through at the correct size. It never would have gone on.
Once I drilled the hole to the proper depth and size I put the knob on as far as it would go and then put it in hot (140 degrees) water for about 5 minutes. It then went on with a few smacks of my mallet.
By the way I did not dunk the knob all the way in the water. Only up to the lip. I did not want it to fill up with water.
