If your bulbs are the old incadescent type, they will be dim from use and age. You may just want to buy some new ones and try them out. I beleive all the new replacement sealed beam bulbs are halogene type and will be much brighter.
I recently did this on my 6v. truck and was amazed at how much brighter the new lamps were.
