There is no taper to the holes when you knock out the existing balls but the NAPA parts have a taper. I took my pitman arm and steering arm to a machine shop to have them make bushings to give me a 1/2" hole. I am using the replacement new style tie rods ends, they are 1/2" shaft with no taper, having the machine shop make a new 7/8" drag link shaft same as my tie rod but shorter, much shorter. I also thought about cutting my tie rod and welding it together to make the drag link shaft but decided to have one made since the machine shop said it was nothing to make one. They are not done yet but I expect it all to work fine. I am also upgrading to a new 1" tie rod with new ends.
