This is really a simple setup. I assume that "holding the high tension wire to ground" means leaving a gap. If you don't have a gap, there will be no spark. I like to connect a spark plug wire into the coil, attach the other end to a spark plug and sit it on the valve cover. That way I can check for a healthy spark. I know that if the condenser is open, it will generate almost no spark at all.
