I just reverted to a 1957 standard axle that SWEET helped me rebuild. My son and I put it under the truck (after fighting out the old) and it mates up pretty good.
However, I realized I don't know what the proper length that the driveshaft can be out the back of the transmission is. Meaning, The shaft can move in and out some, but I don't know by how much.
My worry is that someone, when they installed the posi rear end (5-bolt) may have shortened or replaced the driveshaft with one of a different length.
With the driveshaft fully inserted into the trans, I have a gap between the differential and U joint of about 1.5 inches. The driveshaft can travel out from the trans that far and SEEMS okay, but is this normal? My driveshaft is now about 1.5 inches from where it bottoms against the trans end.
Here's a shot of the gap with the driveshaft fully inserted into the trans.
