Figured it out after some more research into the matter. Found in the thread "Will you teach me about motor mounts? '54 3100"
"Can't say for sure Lonnie, but logic seems to dictate that it would over lap the front. The
most likely place for an oil leak to develop would be at the front crank seal meaning if oil
got past the shield it would probably end up more towards the front. The back of the
mount is well under the front plate. Also the stones, mud water and other debris would be
thrown up from the front and it might offer a little extra protection. A cut away
illustration of the mount is in the FAM, section 6 sheet 12 and it appears that the curved
edge is towards the front.
Amazing how something as simple as a rubber motor mount can cause so much agony
isn’t it!
