Best thing to do is remove the wire from the points to the coil and put you're tester one lead to a ground and the other on the wire going to the points. The condiction that you're having is called in the electrical trade as "Backfeed" it's when there are more than one circuits on a hot lead,when the circuit is off you're reading the ground thru the other OFF circuits thru the ignition switch connection.
