Did you buy a new hinge piece, or ornament ? I had this issue with a hinge I got fron Chev's of the 40's. The original hinge has an extension front and rear that fits into the hole in the ornament, and sits on the concave recess at the firewall. The new one I got was way too large in diameter to fit at the ornament. The holes for bolting up the hood halves were also drilled wrong. Chev's of the 40's said this was first complaint they had gotten, but did not have an alternative / gave me a refund. I ended up using a small screwdriver tip for now until I can find the correct hinge
