Great idea. Sounds like you are into wood working tools. If you make the inset be a hole through the bench top with just a shoulder around the perimeter, you could even use it as a router table. Attach your router to a plywood or phenolic plate and drop it into the inset opening. Looking forward to your pictures of the finished product.
