You are right not to use teflon tape as it does not hold up to gasoline. I believe plumbers "pipe dope" thread sealant will work. Just ensure you go sparingly so that none of it gets in the line.
But, sealant on the threads of a flared fitting really doesn't do much as the line will leak between the line and "nut"
