Teflon tape does have its place, but most connections on the fuel system are mechanical..they are tapers against seats as opposed to tapered pipe threads. I save the Teflon for non-automotive uses and just use some type of thread sealant on the engine when needed.
Dig around, you might find some white stringy stuff plugging your carburetor....bingo!
