I can weld decently (not professionally). I have a MIG, so I was just thinking to drill small holes in the tabs (L-shaped) so I can just basically touch a spot weld through each hole. Maybe 3 holes per tab and wait between each to keep the heat down. The motors aren't too expensive, so I guess you're right, if I mess one up, I can buy another and try again.
