Any switch or connector that gets hot to the touch is a pretty good sign it's overloaded. Once you get the relay system working, the heavy load on the switch and the dimmer will go away.

Some things never change- - - -we were putting relays on headlight systems back in the 1950's to make 'em burn brighter.
