Hy bgd54, the distributor will have no problem with the twelve volts. I think you should check for wear in the distributor bushings. If you have access to a dwell meter hook it up and run the engine, worn parts will result in inconsistant readings on the meter, or you could remove the disributor and physically check for wear.
