My memory is faulty, but I think back in the day re-torqueing the head AND re-adjusting the valves after the engine was broke in (500-2000 miles) was practiced by more than one mechanic. And that was on engines that had no problems.
Always get a 2nd opinion, especially if I am the source of the 1st opinion.
