"okie" refers to the poor farmers (Oklahoma farmers) that had to leave their farms during the dust bowl. They migrated to CA (as depicted in "The Grapes or Wrath"). Obviously, they were dirt poor - an "okie" bushing described a poor man's fix of a worn out bushing.
