I read an article a while ago where they showed some data on the nature of the conventional spark through various rpm levels and conditions. It turns out that the points ignition spark is a big compromise but it gets the job done. I notice on my friends V12, it has a dual point setup, each set serving six cylinders. I can only assume that generating spark at higher RPMs for twelve cylinders is beyond the capability of one set of points.
