I had the same problem on a crate 350. The damper I was for an 12:00 timing mark instead of 2:00. I set the timing mark at 12:00 TDC on #1cylinder on compression, then made a new mark on the damper that aligns with the marks at 2:00. This seems to work untill I get the correct damper and change it out.
Be careful moving the timing too far, mine kicked back and took several teeth off the flex plate. Many cuss words along wiith tranny removal I fixed
both problems.
The damper may have slipped , but yor ear is telling you that the marks are not aligned for the damper you have.
