Not knowing your situation, I just gotta ask this. Why would you need to hone the lifter
bore??? That’s very unusual, valve lifters are fit up with a very tight tolerance, down in
the tenths of a thousandth generally. Unless they have been run dry this is one of the last
places for wear to turn up in an engine. God knows I haven’t seen everything but I sold
auto parts in a past life and I never sold an over size lifter for a gas engine.
If your lifters are tight 99.9% of the time it’s just varnish and can be cleaned up with
carburetor cleaner or something similar and a fine Scotch Brite (gray) pad. If your bore is
rally gummed up and you really need to be aggressive, you can slit a wooden dowel and
use a strip of Scotch Brite driven by your trusty Milwaukee drill motor. If for some reason
the bore got scored up then you could also use the dowel with a fine grit emery cloth and
a light oil such as kerosene or fuel oil.
