It won't hurt the engine at all to run with them loose, and if you have a new cam it will loosen up a bit more as the cam and lifters break in. It will clatter a bit, but don't worry about it. Once you have run it for an hour or so, then you can adjust the valves hot, but the idea is to never adjust them tighter than spec or the seats will burn.
