There have been many changes in ring design since that manual was published, so its information is somewhat obsolete. Early oil rings were single-piece castings, which were later replaced by multi-piece steel rings. The oil ring setup with a spacer behind the expander was found to be an unnecessarily complicated design, and it was phased out. Just be sure to stagger the ends of all the pieces, and don't let the ends of the expander overlap as you're installing the scraper rails, and you'll be in good shape.
