That's one cool idea and a beautiful job Ron. I've had the same problem finding a place for a clock and have had a little loose analog clock rolling around the floor for five years.
I would imagine that the wood worker supplies would have those just for those woodwork project that your friend is doing.
Can I assume that you just press fit the housing into the bore in the knob?

Actually had time to look a few clocks up. This is a nice one and appears to be similar to the one your friend found for you. A little more research and I'm sure you could come up with lots of different styles.
