Fire, Here's what you could do for experience. Get a piece of flat strap, maybe 1/4" X 4" X 24". Lay it on your welding table & somewhere near the middle run a good hot bead across the 4" dimension. Don't matter too much if you actually have another piece of iron to weld on or not, but if you do, even better. That means you'll run two beads, one on ea. side of your simulated perch. Now watch the 24" piece curl up towards the weld side.
