thanks jerry - i have never used the style spring compressor that works with the head on the engine but i will look into it. sounds like the way to go. the only reason i was thinking of doing the head gasket too is because of the condition of the coolant........looks like it might have either rust or oil in it. might try the valve seals first like you suggested. thanks - john
