You've likely already thought of this, and I'm not too sure if it's possible or not, but you might check the flatness of the pump and backing plate to see if it might be slightly warped. I don't think I have ever seen that happen, but couldn't hurt to double check it.
I don' know about the copper spray on sealant on the fiber head gasket, but can't see it causing any problems.
