If the engine set up for awhile with the exhaust valve open it may have come in through there. I would see if the engine rolls over and check the other cylinders. You could pull the push rods out to close the valves and add compressed air to the cylinders, remove the thermostat housing and watch for air bubbles. If you see any it show a bad head gasket, if not than you may get lucky.
